Nutrition and dietetics professionals have a unique knowledge of both the science and the art of nutrition. The blend of scientific knowledge and social and cultural factors influencing what people eat allow nutritionists to assist individuals in health promotion, disease prevention, and disease management. The Bachelor of Science in Nutrition Sciences at UNLV is designed to prepare students to enter the profession with an evidence-based approach to dietetics and medical nutrition therapy.
Programs and Concentrations
B.S. in Nutrition Sciences
Students meeting the requirements established by the department will receive a B.S. in Nutrition Sciences.
Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD)
Students pursuing the Registered Dietitian credential need to fulfill the requirements of the DPD. Students can simultaneously fulfill Nutrition Sciences degree requirements and the DPD requirements. For more detailed information on the DPD click here.
The DPD was granted Initial Accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association in 2005. Dietetic Internship (DI)
The DI is designed to prepare interns to meet entry-level skills expected of the Registered Dietitian. Students wishing to enter this program must complete DPD requirements before application. Click here to learn more about the Dietetic Internship.
In order to become a Registered Dietitian (R.D.) students must:
- Complete the DPD Course requirements that are listed on the advising page.
- Apply for, become accepted into, and complete a CADE-approved dietetic internship.
- Pass the national Registration Examination for Dietitians.
Concentrations
Comprehensive
This general program allows students to meet all DPD requirements. This concentration allows students to choose Nutrition Sciences elective courses.
Sports Nutrition
This concentration allows students to take specialized courses in sports nutrition and exercise physiology. Students in this concentration will meet DPD requirements.
Nutrition & Dietetics Management
This concentration allows students to take specialized courses in food and beverage management. Students in this concentration will meet DPD requirements.
Pre-professional
This concentration provides a well-rounded science background for those students interested in applying for graduate or professional schools. Students completing this concentration DO NOT meet the DPD requirements.
